What This Tool Does

Remove Line Breaks Online takes text that arrived with hard line breaks baked into it and turns it back into clean, flowing copy. You paste, the result updates as you type, and nothing is sent anywhere. The whole job happens in your browser.

A line break remover has one genuinely hard problem: telling an artefact apart from an intention. A paragraph you wrote is separated from the next one by a blank line. A paragraph copied out of a PDF is chopped into short lines every six or eight words, because that is where the page edge was. This tool removes the second kind and keeps the first.

The three line-break modes

  • Join wrapped lines — the default. Merges the short lines inside each paragraph into one continuous line and leaves a blank line between paragraphs, so your structure survives. This is what you want for text copied from a PDF, an email or a Word document.
  • Remove all line breaks — collapses everything into a single unbroken line, paragraph breaks included. Use it when the destination cannot contain a newline at all: a spreadsheet cell, a meta description, a one-line form field, a URL parameter.
  • Keep line breaks — leaves your line structure exactly as it is and applies only the spacing options. Useful when the breaks are deliberate but the spacing is not: a poem, a list, an address block, a snippet of code.

Why Copied Text Has Unwanted Line Breaks

Most document formats store text as lines rather than as a continuous stream, and where a line ends is usually a rendering decision, not a semantic one. Copying lifts the rendering decision out with the words.

  • PDFs are the worst offender. A PDF stores each visual line separately, so copying a paragraph hands you a newline every time the text reached the right-hand margin (typically eight to fifteen words in). Paste that into an email and you get a ragged column of short lines.
  • Emails are often hard-wrapped at 72 or 78 characters, a convention inherited from plain-text mail. Quoted replies add >  prefixes and re-wrap the text a second time.
  • Word documents carry soft line breaks (Shift+Enter) alongside real paragraph marks, and the two are indistinguishable once the text lands somewhere plain.
  • Websites insert breaks through layout, <br> tags, or table and grid cells that each become their own line on copy.
  • Spreadsheets put a newline inside a cell when you press Alt+Enter, and copying a range joins cells with tabs and rows with newlines.
  • AI-generated text frequently arrives with Markdown line breaks, trailing spaces at the end of every line, and inconsistent blank lines between blocks.

The result is the same each time: the meaning is intact, the whitespace is wrong.

How to Remove Line Breaks From Text

  1. Paste your text into the box on the left. The cleaned result appears on the right immediately. There is no button to press and nothing to submit.
  2. Choose a mode. Join wrapped lines is right for most copied text. Switch to Remove all line breaks if the destination cannot hold a newline.
  3. Leave Preserve paragraph breaks switched on unless you genuinely want one continuous block.
  4. Read the statistics. Original Lines and Result Lines show how much joining happened; Lines Removed is the difference between the two.
  5. Press Copy Output and paste wherever the text is going. Clear empties both boxes and returns every statistic to zero.

Worked example

Input, copied from a PDF — six lines, with a blank line between the two paragraphs:

The report was filed on Monday.
It covered three regions and
twelve product lines.

The second paragraph began
after a blank line.

Result with the default settings:

The report was filed on Monday. It covered three regions and twelve product lines.

The second paragraph began after a blank line.

Six lines became three. The blank line separating the two paragraphs survived, the hard wraps inside each paragraph did not, and Lines Removed reads 3. Switch Preserve paragraph breaks off and the same input collapses to a single line of two sentences.

Remove Extra Spaces and Blank Lines

The spacing options work independently of the mode, so you can use them on their own. Keep line breaks plus one or two checkboxes is often all a messy list needs.

  • Remove extra spaces collapses any run of two or more spaces into one. Copied text accumulates these from justified PDFs, from table columns padded out to align, and from Markdown that uses two trailing spaces to force a break.
  • Trim leading & trailing whitespace strips the spaces and tabs at the start and end of every line, so indented copy stops looking indented once it is pasted somewhere that renders it literally.
  • Remove blank lines drops empty lines. With Preserve paragraph breaks on, the single blank line between two paragraphs is kept and only surplus blank lines collapse: three in a row become one.
  • Clean tabs converts every tab character into a single space. Tabs arrive from spreadsheets, from code and from Word’s default indent; left alone they render at unpredictable widths depending on where the text is pasted.

Non-breaking spaces — the &nbsp; a website or Word inserts to hold two words together — are normalised to ordinary spaces before anything else happens. Without that step, removing extra spaces from text quietly misses the ones that matter most, because a run of non-breaking spaces is invisible and never matches a normal space.

Line endings are normalised the same way: Windows CRLF and old Mac CR breaks are treated as ordinary line breaks, so text copied out of Notepad or a legacy export behaves like everything else.

Common Uses

  • Cleaning a paragraph copied out of a PDF so it flows again in an email or a document
  • Unwrapping email text that was hard-wrapped at 72 characters, or flattening a quoted reply
  • Removing the soft line breaks a Word document picked up from Shift+Enter
  • Fixing text copied from a website, where layout and <br> tags turned into newlines
  • Flattening a spreadsheet cell containing Alt+Enter breaks so it fits on one line
  • Tidying AI-generated text that arrived with Markdown breaks and trailing spaces
  • Preparing one continuous line of copy for a meta description, a form field, a CSV cell or a URL
  • Normalising a list, an address block or a bibliography where only the spacing is wrong

Your Text Never Leaves Your Browser

Remove Line Breaks Online runs entirely on your device. There is no API call, no upload, no database and no server-side text processing. Your text is never sent anywhere, and the tool keeps working offline once the page has loaded.

That is deliberate rather than incidental. What people paste into a line break remover is often a contract clause, a manuscript, a client email, a medical or legal note, or something covered by an NDA. None of it needs to leave the machine to have its whitespace fixed, so none of it does.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I remove line breaks from text?

Paste the text into the box on the left. The cleaned version appears on the right as you type, with the default setting “Join wrapped lines”: the short lines inside each paragraph are merged into one flowing line while the blank line between paragraphs is kept. Press Copy Output when you are done. There is nothing to submit and no file to upload.

Can I remove line breaks from copied PDF text?

Yes — that is the case this tool is built for. A PDF stores every visual line separately, so copying a paragraph gives you a newline wherever the text hit the right-hand margin. Join wrapped lines reverses exactly that: it treats a blank line as a real paragraph break and every other line ending as an artefact of the page width, then re-flows each paragraph into continuous text.

Can I remove extra spaces too?

Yes, and it is on by default. Remove extra spaces collapses any run of two or more spaces into a single space, Trim leading & trailing whitespace strips padding from the start and end of every line, and Clean tabs turns each tab character into one space. Non-breaking spaces are normalised to ordinary spaces first, so the invisible ones a website or Word inserts are caught as well. All three work with any line-break mode, including Keep line breaks if you only want the spacing fixed.

Can I preserve paragraph breaks?

Yes — Preserve paragraph breaks is switched on by default. A blank line in your input stays a paragraph break in the output, so a multi-paragraph document keeps its shape while the hard wraps inside each paragraph disappear. Switch it off to collapse everything into one continuous block, or choose Remove all line breaks to do the same thing regardless of that setting.

What is the difference between “Join wrapped lines” and “Remove all line breaks”?

Join wrapped lines removes the breaks inside a paragraph and keeps the breaks between paragraphs, which is what you want for prose. Remove all line breaks removes every break including the paragraph ones, producing a single unbroken line. That is right for a spreadsheet cell, a meta description or a form field that must not contain a newline. Keep line breaks removes no breaks at all and applies only the spacing options.

Does it remove blank lines as well?

Remove blank lines drops empty lines, including lines that contain only spaces or tabs once trimming has been applied. With Preserve paragraph breaks switched on it is deliberately conservative: the single blank line separating two paragraphs is kept, and only surplus blank lines collapse, so three blank lines in a row become one rather than none.

Is my text uploaded?

No. Your text stays in your browser. There is no API, no database and no server-side processing. The cleaning is done by JavaScript on your own device, and the tool keeps working offline after the page has loaded. Nothing you paste is stored, logged or sent anywhere.
