What Lorem Ipsum Is
Lorem Ipsum is placeholder text: scrambled Latin that holds a space in a layout until the real words are written. It starts Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, and it has been the standard filler in printing and design since the 1500s, when a printer took a passage of Cicero’s de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum — written in 45 BC — cut it up and set it as a specimen of type.
The text is not random English and it is not meant to be read. The original passage was sliced and reordered so that it looks like prose without being prose: sentences of varied length, commas in plausible places, a normal spread of short and long words. Because it carries no meaning, your eye goes to the shape of the page instead of stopping on the words: the columns, the margins, the weight of a heading, the rhythm of a paragraph.
That single property is the whole reason the thing has survived five centuries. Any readable filler, even “Text here, text here, text here”, invites the reader to notice the repetition. Real copy invites an argument about the copy. Lorem Ipsum invites neither.
What Lorem Ipsum Is Used For
Why designers use placeholder text
A comp filled with real words gets reviewed as writing. Someone reads the headline, disagrees with it, and the meeting is about the headline rather than the grid. Placeholder text keeps the review where it belongs: does the hierarchy work, is the line length comfortable, does the block of body copy sit at the right weight against the image beside it? It also shows the true size of a text area. Three lines of Lorem Ipsum tells you what a paragraph will do to that card long before anyone has written one.
Why developers use dummy text
Interfaces break on content that has not arrived yet. A product name that is four words long instead of one, a description that wraps to six lines, a table cell that has to hold a whole sentence. These are the things that overflow, truncate badly or push a button off the screen. Generating filler of a known length is how you test those cases deliberately rather than discovering them after launch. Character mode exists for exactly this: fill a field to its real limit and see whether the layout survives.
Where you will see it
Website and app mock-ups, Figma and Sketch templates, theme and starter-kit demos, wireframes, pitch decks, print specimens, email templates, CMS previews, and any component library that needs to show what a populated card looks like. Most design tools ship with a Lorem Ipsum plugin for the same reason this page exists.
How to Generate Lorem Ipsum
- Choose what you are counting. Paragraphs is the default and is usually right for a page mock-up. Switch to sentences, words or characters when the space you are filling has a limit of its own.
- Set the quantity. Three paragraphs already fills a typical two-column block. The label above the field tells you the unit and the ceiling for the mode you are in.
- Decide on the opening. Start with “Lorem ipsum…” is on, so the first sentence is the traditional one. Turn it off and the text begins with an ordinary generated sentence.
- Pick Plain Text or HTML. Plain text is bare words. HTML wraps each paragraph in a
<p>tag and adds nothing else. - Copy it, or regenerate. Copy Output puts the text on your clipboard. Regenerate keeps every setting and gives you a different arrangement, useful when a particular run has an awkward line break.
The text is rebuilt the moment you change anything, so there is no generate button to hunt for and nothing to wait on. Four counters underneath — words, characters, sentences and paragraphs — are measured from the text actually in the box, never estimated, so what they say is what you are about to copy.
Generating by Paragraphs, Sentences, Words and Characters
- Paragraphs — the natural unit for filling a page. Each paragraph is three to six sentences, varied so the blocks do not look mechanically identical. Up to 100.
- Sentences — a run of individual sentences, still grouped into paragraphs so the result reads like body copy rather than a list. Up to 500.
- Words — stops at exactly the number you ask for. The last sentence is trimmed to fit and re-punctuated, so the word count in the stats is the word count you get. Up to 5,000.
- Characters — fills towards a character budget without slicing a word in half. Generation stops at the last whole sentence that still fits, so the result lands at or just under your limit. Up to 50,000.
Two options shape the result. Preserve paragraph breaks keeps the blank line between blocks; turn it off and everything collapses into one continuous run, which is what you want for a single-line field or a narrow card. Start with “Lorem ipsum…” controls the traditional opening.
If you are filling a field with a hard limit, generate in characters and then check the result with Character Counter. If you are filling a page and want to know how long it will take someone to read the real copy that replaces it, paste the same block into Reading Time Calculator.
Plain Text vs HTML Output
Plain Text gives you words and paragraph breaks and nothing else. Paste it into a document, a spreadsheet cell, a design tool’s text layer, a Figma frame, an email draft or a form field. It is the default because most mock-ups want text, not markup.
HTML wraps each paragraph in a <p> tag, one paragraph per tag, separated by a blank line. There are no inline styles, no wrapper <div>, no classes and no entities beyond what the words need, so the markup drops straight into a template, a CMS rich-text field, a React component or an email HTML block without anything to strip out afterwards.
The four counters always describe the text, in both modes. In HTML output the box shows the tags, but Words and Characters count the placeholder copy itself rather than the markup around it, which is the number you actually care about when you are sizing a layout.
Common Uses
- Website and app mock-ups — fill a design so it can be judged on layout rather than wording.
- Wireframes and prototypes — realistic-looking body copy at realistic lengths, fast.
- Theme, template and starter-kit demos — show a populated card, post or table without inventing content.
- Component and layout testing — check truncation, wrapping, overflow and fixed-height boxes against text of a known length.
- Filling a field to a limit — character mode for database fields, meta descriptions, ad copy boxes and anything with a hard cap.
- Print specimens and typography tests — the classic use: judge a typeface, a measure and a leading without the distraction of meaning.
- Pitch decks and client previews — show the shape of a page before the copywriting has been signed off.
- Teaching and coursework — a neutral block of text for exercises in layout, CSS or document design.
Once the filler has done its job, the surrounding tools take over: Word Counter for length, Text Compare to see what changed between two drafts, Find & Replace to swap a placeholder phrase everywhere at once, and Case Converter when headings need to match a house style.
Generated in Your Browser, Never Uploaded
This Lorem Ipsum generator runs entirely in your browser. The word list is part of the page itself and every sentence is assembled on your own device. There is no API call, no upload, no database and no server-side generation. Nothing you produce is stored anywhere and nothing is sent to us, because there is nowhere for it to go.
That also makes it fast and dependable. Text appears the instant you change a setting, with no round trip to wait for, and once the page has loaded the tool keeps working offline. Generating fifty thousand characters costs your device a fraction of a second.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Lorem Ipsum?
Lorem Ipsum is placeholder text used to fill a layout before the real words exist. It is scrambled Latin, drawn from two passages of Cicero’s de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum, written in 45 BC and cut up by printers in the 1500s. It looks like prose — it has sentences of varying length, commas in plausible places and a normal distribution of short and long words — but it means nothing, which is exactly why it is useful.
What is Lorem Ipsum used for?
Filling space in a design so the space can be judged. A mock-up set with real copy invites everyone to argue about the wording; a mock-up set with Lorem Ipsum keeps the conversation on the layout, the hierarchy and the spacing. Developers use it for the same reason in the other direction: a component has to survive text of an unknown length, so dummy text of a controlled length is how you find out whether a card, a table cell or a button label breaks before the real content arrives.
Is this Lorem Ipsum generator free?
Yes — completely free, with no account, no sign-up, no watermark and no usage limit. Generate one paragraph or fifty thousand characters, as often as you like. The whole tool is one page of HTML and JavaScript that runs on your own device.
Can I generate Lorem Ipsum by words or paragraphs?
Both, and by sentences too. Pick the unit you want, type a quantity, and the text is rebuilt immediately. Paragraph mode gives you whole blocks of three to six sentences, which is what a page mock-up usually needs; sentence mode gives you a run of sentences that are still broken into paragraphs; word mode stops at exactly the number of words you asked for, which is handy when a component has a hard character or word budget.
Can I generate Lorem Ipsum by characters?
Yes. Character mode builds up to the limit you set, stopping at the last whole sentence that still fits so you never get a word sliced in half. The count shown underneath is the number of characters actually generated, which lands at or just under your limit, useful when a database field, a meta description or a fixed-height box has to be filled to a specific size.
Can I generate HTML Lorem Ipsum?
Yes. Switch Output to HTML and each paragraph is wrapped in a clean <p> tag, with nothing else added: no inline styles, no wrapper divs, no classes. You get markup you can paste straight into a template, a CMS field or a component. Plain Text is the default and gives you the same words with no tags at all.
Does the generator always start with “Lorem ipsum”?
By default, yes: the first sentence is the traditional Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit opening that people expect to see. Turn off Start with “Lorem ipsum…” and the text begins with an ordinary generated sentence instead, which reads less obviously as filler if you want the mock-up to look further along.
Is my generated text sent to a server?
No. There is no API call, no upload, no database and no server-side processing of any kind: the word list lives in the page and every sentence is assembled on your own device. You can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and the generator keeps working. Nothing you generate is stored anywhere, and nothing is sent to us.
