Why ChatGPT writes with asterisks.

Markdown

ChatGPT formats answers in Markdown, a lightweight convention from chat UIs and developer tools: pairs of asterisks around a word mean bold, single asterisks mean italic, a hash means a heading. Inside ChatGPT's own window those symbols never display; they are instructions the interface executes. The moment you copy the answer, you are copying the instructions, not the result.

Why **bold** is not bold on LinkedIn.

No renderer

LinkedIn has no Markdown renderer and the post composer has no formatting toolbar. Whatever you paste is stored and shown as literal characters. So **This is an important lesson.** does not arrive bold; it arrives as a sentence wearing asterisks, and every reader sees where it came from.

The same applies to *italic*, ~~strikethrough~~, heading hashes and Markdown bullet markers. To LinkedIn, all of it is just punctuation.

What happens when you paste it raw.

The giveaway
  • Asterisks render literally around words you wanted emphasized.
  • Heading hashes sit in the text like typos.
  • Bullet lists become hyphen-prefixed lines with report-style gaps.
  • The post is visually louder and reads lazier than what you approved in the chat window.

One paste is all it takes for the structure to collapse; the fix is converting the Markdown, not deleting the formatting.

Unicode bold: emphasis LinkedIn actually renders.

How the fix works

Unicode contains separate bold and italic letter sets (the 𝐛𝐨𝐥𝐝 and 𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘤 alphabets). Because they are plain characters, not formatting codes, LinkedIn stores and displays them like any other letter. GetCleanPost converts your Markdown into those characters, so the emphasis you saw in ChatGPT is the emphasis readers see in the feed.

Before · what you copied
**This is an important lesson.**
After · what LinkedIn shows
𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧.

One honest caveat: Unicode bold letters are technically different characters, and screen readers may spell them out. Bold a hook or a key term, not whole paragraphs, and your posts stay accessible. The Unicode toggle in the tool's advanced options turns the conversion off when you want plain text.

Asterisks are one tell of many.

Whole pipeline

Markdown leftovers travel with the rest of the chatbot packaging: filler phrases, fake-openers, report spacing. The same Clean pass that converts your asterisks also strips that layer, so do both in one paste. Full workflow: ChatGPT to LinkedIn. Everything the formatter does beyond Markdown: AI LinkedIn post formatter.

Questions, answered.

FAQ
Can I just delete the asterisks instead?

You can, but you lose the emphasis with them, and the opening/closing signs are easy to miss in a long post. Converting keeps the intent: the word stays emphasized, the asterisks disappear. That is what the Clean button does automatically.

Do the Unicode characters work on all devices?

They render in LinkedIn's feed on current iOS, Android and desktop browsers. Very old devices may show fallback glyphs. If accessibility matters more than emphasis for a given post, flip the Unicode-bold toggle off and keep plain text.

Why does ChatGPT not just give me LinkedIn-ready text?

Ask it to and it gets partway there, but the model still writes its answers through a Markdown layer, and habit phrases like 'Here is your post' slip back in. Cleaning a raw draft is faster and more reliable than negotiating with the prompt.

Does the tool also fix bullet lists and headings?

Yes. Markdown bullets become clean dash bullets, heading lines get separated and de-hashed, and spacing is rebalanced for the feed. All of it happens in the same paste in the tool above.
